It has been a few weeks since I last blogged, but I wanted to assure everyone that I have not disappeared. The last month has presented a lot of time consuming projects, tasks, and travel that has left me little time to blog. :/
Currently I am playing with the ASP.NET MVC Framework, jQuery, and a Flickr-integrated viewing gallery implementing FlickrNet. I am nearly finished the prototype and I think it is pretty neat! A lot of you have contacted me in the past regarding my photo gallery solutions for BlogEngine.NET so I intend to work on a solution that will work for BlogEngine.NET users. Heck, maybe I'll even have a little multi-part series on how to create your very own!

A fellow BlogEngine.NET user (who's name I do not know unfortunately) alerted me to an issue on my website where you could retrieve my site's user credentials by accessing the JavaScript HttpHandler via a browser and requesting my users.xml file as seen in the following screenshot. Now I would not label myself as a "security expert" by any means, but I think this issue falls under the Crazy Bad category.
I took a look at the code in the BlogEngine.Core project and found out that the issue is with the RetrieveLocalScript() method. Here's the code from BlogEngine.NET Version 1.3:

I came across this website while reading my RSS yesterday and wanted to pass along the message. Life would be a whole lot easier on us web developers without having to program for IE6.
Say no to IE 6! Our current campaign focuses on assisting users in upgrading their Internet Explorer 6 web browser. This campaign will result in former IE 6 users having a more enjoyable experience on the web while (hopefully) creating a less stressful and complicated environment for web developers by hastening the retirement of an outdated browser.

After a long weekend in Las Vegas conquering craps tables, cheering on dueling pianos, drinking margaritas, and jumping out of perfectly good airplane I have returned to home to Washington, DC. I have tried to respond to everyone's comments, as well as planned out a few blog posts to answer a few questions from emails. In the next week or so I'll be posting blog entries on the following topics...

I will be leaving for the city that never sleeps (Las Vegas) tomorrow and will not be returning until Tuesday. My apologies for missing today's toolbox links, but I'm swamped trying to get everything together last minute for this trip. In the meantime be sure to check out the following links from Mix '08...

I've wanted to build a BlogEngine.NET extension to display a photo gallery since I first starting using this product. Vertigo has made my job easier with Slide.Show, a rich Silverlight application that provides an elegant and simple photo sharing user experience. It also supports direct Flickr integration that I have included as a part of this extension. All you have to do is change one configuration value in the configuration.xml and you are all set to hook into your Flickr account.
A live demo can be found at http://dannydouglass.com/page/photogallery.aspx. My website offers a popup version of this gallery (click the "photos" tab above) that I would be glad to explain in a follow-up post if there is any interest. [Requires Silverlight 1.0]

For years I have found useful tools & tricks from online collections of links and resources and I recently decided I wanted to be able to easily do this in BlogEngine.NET. Much like the QuickerLinks extension from ckincincy I envisioned collecting my links in one centralized area and being able to easily distribute them through posts. However, I also had a few other features in mind...
- Link Categories
- Link Category Descriptions
- Link Descriptions
- Centralized Links Toolbox Page
Enter my new Toolbox extension! You can view a live example of this extension on
my toolbox page.

I was catching up on the news I missed this weekend while attending a hockey tournament that left me sore and disappointed when I came across a story from ESPN.com announcing the release of the NFL widgets. Despite that poor timing (the season ends in less than a week), these widgets are pretty dang cool. I have embedded the NFL Top Story Widget at the bottom of this post to show an example.

After just releasing a social bookmarking extension that included a generic user control and BlogEngine.net version I stumbled across a new widget provided by AddThis.com. I had noticed the widget on sites like dezinerfolio and a post on a game being delayed from ign.com, but never really looked into it. Well, turns out the beat me to the punch and offer a nice little service that allows you to create an account and grab a widget for RSS feeds and/or social bookmarks for individual posts. They offer several different button styles, and even a javascript dropdown-style beta widget which you see on each of my blog posts at DannyDouglass.com. Take a look at the different button styles that are offered...

I wish that I could take credit for designing the neat caricature you see on my website in the "about me" region that appears on the top-right of each page, however the truth is that I purchased it from Fasticon.com. They offer an awesome package for either $29 [head only] or $49 [full body] where they will create a custom caricature based on photos that you send. The process offers two separate approval points - the first occurs after the hand drawing is completed, and the second is once the color sample has been digitally created. Below is an graphic that shows the journey my caricature took before it was final. You can also see the side-by-side comparison of one of the pictures I sent of myself on Fasticon's blog post on my caricature.
